With a PhD in Economics, from the University of Aix-Marseille in 1992, Mr. Nizar Baraka began his career with an experience in teaching at the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences of the University Mohammed V, and at The National Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics.
He joined the Ministry of Finance in 1996 and became Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister for Economic and General Affairs between 2007 and 2011; then Minister of Economy and Finance from January 2012 to July 2013 and President of The Economic, Social and Environmental Council (ESEC), from August 2013 to December 2018.
He also steered the Morocco-USA strategic dialogue on the economic side and headed the COP22 Scientific Committee.
Mr. Baraka received the “Best Finance Minister of the MENA Region for 2012” and “Finance Minister of the Year 2012” awards from The Banker, the Financial Times’ leading press group. He was also named “Finance Minister of the Year for the Middle East and North Africa in 2013” by the Emerging Markets magazine, a World Bank and International Monetary Fund reference.
